Sea Port Facilities
The Deep Water Port
The deepwater port of Basseterre is the main cargo handling facility for St. Kitts. The port was constructed in 1980 and has been outfitted with the necessary facilities and expertise to handle a diverse range of goods while providing quick turnaround for ships and their cargo. Vessels of up to 900 ft in length with a draught of 27 ft are comfortably accommodated by the Deep Water Port. A high emphasis on quality service allows the port to average a five hour turnaround time on cargo vessels and offer 24 hour pilotage services. Other services include container storage next to each berth as well as reefer facilities and a spacious park to accommodate the port’s growing traffic in containers. The main imports handled at the port include building materials, cement, fuel oils, lumber, reefer cargo and vehicles. In 2007, Total port throughput was nearly 300,000 tonnes, of which over 90 per cent was imported while transhipped cargo accounted for nearly 20,000 tonnes. Liner services are provided by Tropical Shipping, Bernuth Lines, Seabaord Marine and Geest Line. During the tourist season, the Deep Water Port provides support to the Port Zante and the Cruise Line industry by accommodating the berthing of some cruise ships.
Port Zante
Port Zante is the main landing facility for Cruise ships. This Port is located in the heart of Basseterre’s waterfront area and provides modern facilities designed to accommodate large “Eagle” class cruise ships as well as receive smaller pleasure crafts.
